Letter [edit]
h (upper example H)
- The 10th letter of the alphabet of the Maltese alphabet, written in the Latin script.
Usage notes [edit]
- In contemporary Maltese, h remains a true consonant [ħ] in the following cases:
- in discussion-final position or when being the concluding radical of a verb: ikrah [ˈɪkraħ], jixbhu [ˈjɪʃpħʊ];
- earlier the negative ending -x: jarawhx [jaˈrawħʃ];
- in the clusters -għh-, -ħh-, -hh-, which all become [ħħ].
- Otherwise it is silent or leaves only a vocalic trace:
- Following and preceding a, eastward, o are lengthened if stressed: hedded [ˈɛːddɛt], fehmet [ˈfɛːmɛt]. Other vowels are not affected.
- In intervocalic position information technology is a glide, [j] afterwards i, ie, and [due west] later u: jibniha [jɪbˈnɪːja], inħobbuhom [ɪnħɔbˈbuːwɔm].
- The sequence -aho- becomes [ɔː]: rahom [rɔːm]. The sequence -ehi- becomes [ɛj] or [ɛˈjiː]: ftehim [ftɛjm], [ftɛˈjiːm].
- Phonotactically, word-initial h now by and large behaves like a vowel, allowing contractions such as m'hemmx [mɛːmʃ]. Nevertheless, give-and-take-internal h still behaves like a (virtual) consonant. Compare for example qablu [ˈʔablʊ] with qabilha [ʔaˈbɪla], which latter is formed as though the l were followed by a consonant.
